Common problems and what to do about them

It is very possible your orthodontic appliances can be damaged during the course of your treatment. Broken brackets/wires and wire pokes are the most common types of orthodontic issues. It may be managed at your next scheduled visit while some may need to be attended to as soon as possible - if you need to find out more about how urgent your issue is, please contact us

Sore teeth
Teeth can be tender after braces are placed, wires are changed and appliances fitted. They tend to be sore for 3-7 days. Please take your pain relief regularly and in no time you will find that the discomfort has eased. If you are concerned about the amount of pain you are in please contact our reception.
Broken braces and wires
If a brace completely detaches from the tooth or it breaks and is sliding along the wire please contact our reception so that we can arrange to have it fixed.
Wire poke
If a wire is poking your cheek or gums we recommend to use the wax provided. Sometimes you can use a nail cutter to remove the part of the wire that is annoying you. Please contact our practice so that we can help fix the problem as soon as possible.
Colour band has come off
The colour band placed around the brace helps to hold the wire in place. If a colour band falls you may notice the tooth moving away from the wire. If this occurs please contact our reception so that we can replace the colour band.
Lost/broken plates
Removable plates are occasionally lost or broken. Please contact our reception so that we can arrange to see you to decide if the plate can be repaired or needs to be replaced. The orthodontist will inform you if there are any additional charges for the repair or replacement plate.
Sore lips and cheeks
Braces can rub and cause ulcers and cuts. The mouth needs time to adjust, use wax provided to place over any area of the braces rubbing on cheek.  If pain worsens feel free to contact us, but patience is required, hang in there!
Hit to the face
If you receive a knock to your face, teeth or jaw, please contact your family dentist as soon as possible. They will most likely take an x-ray and complete the necessary paperwork so that your accident can be lodged with ACC.

Please contact us after you have seen your family dentist so that we can check for and repair any damage that they have occurred to the orthodontic appliances. If you do not have a family dentist please inform us so that one can be recommended for you.
Retainer problems
Please contact our office for an appointment immediately if:
  • our removable retainer is lost, broken, feels tight or does not fit properly
  • your fixed retainer is lost, broken, bent or the teeth that it is attached to feel like they are moving.
Teeth may move quickly and become crooked without proper and consistent retainer wear.
